As we celebrate a legacy of love, be reminded that love is the core value of the Christian faith. February is noted as the month that we celebrate love with the recognition of Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, Heart month and Black History month. We honor the legacy of each of these events. Within this month is also Ash Wednesday which begins the season of Lent. Lent is a forty day period of repentance and preparation as we approach Easter, also known as Resurrection Sunday. Christians believe that the greatest demonstration of love is when God sacrificed His Son Jesus on a cross so that we can be free from the power and penalty of sin.
Jesus left us a legacy of love. Legacy is something that should concern each of us. It is what will be honored beyond our lifetime, and includes far more than the material or financial resources we leave behind. The Civil Rights Movement left us a legacy of peace, President’s Day reminds us of a legacy of change, and Valentine’s Day helps us understand the legacy of relationships. Heart month reveals to us the value of self-care. Each day we live we are writing our own history as we prepare to leave our legacy.
The legacy of Community Church is based on the Christian ethic of love. We are taught to love God, love others, love ministry, and love ourselves. Our spiritual leaders have modeled the core value of love. Our congregation has honored them through the years for their love and service. Our ministry values the sacrifices of people who serve others in the spirit of love. We value the legacy of love we have received from the Lord and share with His people. Join me in celebrating in 2018 a twenty year legacy of love and service.
