Our theme for 2019 is “I WILL”. The theme of the Church of God in Christ is “YES!” As we journey through the book entitled I Will by Thom Rainer, it is my hope that as Christian people we will say YES I WILL. We are living in a time when church attendance is on a decline. This means fewer people are willing to say they will serve, sacrifice and support the church on a consistent basis. They may love the Lord (the bridegroom), but they are not committed to the bride (the church). Supporting the church is a reflection of our love for the Lord.
Unfortunately some people have lost their fire, joy and passion for ministry. There could be a variety of reasons why this spirit has crept into the church. Some folk have become disappointed in the imperfection of other people; others may have served in a particular ministry too long and may need to experience another form of ministry; still others are aging and not willing to engage in other methods of ministry. The church is constantly dealing with church dropouts. These are a few reasons that churches are not as fruitful as they once were.
The Biblical record reveals that God has always called a person to lead His people and called a people who would respond to God’s leader. The leader would respond to God in obedience by saying “I WILL” and the people would respond to God’s leader by saying “I WILL”. When God calls us it is easy to make excuses or find a justifiable reason not to respond to His call in obedience.
This year is a call to faithfulness to God as we serve His church. Our faithfulness will yield fruitfulness as we believe God for more souls in the Kingdom and ambassadors for Christ. It is my hope that this book, I WILL, will position us to meditate on God’s word in scripture and in prayer, motivate us to execute our mission and ministry, mobilize us to win people to Christ and His Church. Let us remember the old hymn which says “A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify, A never dying soul to save, And fit it for the sky. To serve the present age, My calling to fulfill, O may it all my powers engage to do my Master’s will.”
